Caring for Joint Health : Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with many vital roles in the body, including maintaining joint health. One of its key functions is aiding the production of collagen, a protein that provides structure and strength to cartilage of joints.​

Collagen Production and Joint Health​

Vitamin C contributes to the conversion of proline, an amino acid, into hydroxyproline, which is crucial for collagen synthesis. This process is essential for maintaining the integrity of joint tissues. Vitamin C also supports the production of glycosaminoglycans, long-chain polysaccharides that are important for the structural framework of collagen in joints.​

Protecting Joints from Wear and Tear​

Without adequate Vitamin C, collagen production is impaired, which can lead to reduce integrity of cartilage, linked to higher rate of cartilage turnover in osteoarthritis2. Osteoarthritis occurs where the cartilage that cushions the joints gradually breaks down, leading to pain and stiffness that worsen overtime which can limit daily mobility. ​

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant which helps to reduce the harmful effects of free radicals in our body including the joints.​

Hence, it’s important to ensure adequate vitamin C intake to help support strong and flexible joints even as you age.​
